wListening to silent boats ww8 June 2010

We listened to the silent boats,
the harbour did not sound.
Behind us, ropes and serpents
fought the sea; red and gory animal.
Still climbing. But with us were only
knots of the absent breeze, weaving
and dissolving sharp-tongued masts.
Nothing gripped the surface
of the lizard-flat night
